Wife's Nephew Died – How Do I Be There For Her?

Q: Allana, my wife recently had a family member pass away in a tragic accident. My issue is due to the manner of which the family member died, it was a troubling situation gone terribly wrong and he was shot and killed. I am having a hard time providing comfort without sounding bias or disconnected. I didn’t know the kid. He was only 19, but she is taking it every hard. How can I be there for her when I can’t empathize with her.

A: I am so sorry. The place to focus: why you can not empathize? Was it because it was a kid and you have never had a young person die like that? Was it due to the “manner” being troubling and there is judgment that he wasn’t a good kid? We need to uncover the reason why you just can’t be there for her.
