Should I End a 40 Year Friendship For My Boyfriend?

Should I End a 40 Year Friendship For My Boyfriend?

Question: I have had a close male friend for over 40 years. Nothing has ever happened between us – it has been strictly platonic. I am dating someone new and my boyfriend has expressed he is not comfortable with the relationship. Should I end my friendship or should it be a non-issue?

Answer: I would NOT end your friendship because of your partner. I can understand his discomfort and an open discussion should take place where he can feel heard but I would not simply walk away from 40 years to appease someone else. Let’s look at a few reasons why this may be causing a rift between you and your beloved.
